In people with COPD, short-duration supramaximal high-intensity interval training (SupraHIIT) is more feasible and allows for significantly higher exercise intensities than moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). This form of training also increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (pBDNF) and other beneficial exercise-related molecules, suggesting potential benefits beyond lung function, such as improved overall health and physical capacity. Incorporating SupraHIIT could offer a time-efficient way to enhance exercise tolerance and promote extrapulmonary health improvements in COPD management.
